La Clemenza di Tito: A Retelling

ClemenzaWeb.jpg

LOLA is proud to present one of Mozart's final operas with our own spin, La Clemenza di Tito: A Retelling. Performances will be March 1st and 2nd at 7:30 pm and March 4th at 4 pm.

Director's Notes: "What does it mean to be a good leader?  Is a good leader someone who is beloved but perhaps not just?  Is a good leader someone who rules with an iron fist? Can there be a middle ground? These questions are just a few of the themes and larger ideas that Mozart and his librettist Mazzolà (based off of a libretto by Metastasio) were grappling with in La Clemenza di Tito.

In reimagining the opera for LOLA we have taken out the recitative and written in a new character, the Hebrew queen Berenice, who will serve as a narrator and guide as we explore those themes within a modern context.

Come experience some of Mozart's most dazzling and lyrical musical numbers in Austin's intimate Scottish Rite Theater with LOLA's La Clemenza di Tito: A Retelling. " - Rebecca Herman, Artistic Producer, LOLA.

The LOLA and Alamo Drafthouse Present The "Epic La Femme Bohème Moonstruck Boat Party"

LaFemmeBOATFBBanner.jpg

The Alamo Drafthouse andpresent – Epic MOONSTRUCK and La Femme Bohème Boat Party! Join us October 29th for the most joyously romantic adventure of your lives. First, you will watch the 1987 Academy Award winning movie MOONSTRUCK at Alamo Ritz. Then you will board a Capital Cruises double-decker ship for a sunset cruise featuring a full concert version of La Femme Bohème by LOLA. Your evening cruise will include drinks and snacks.

La Femme Bohème is the award winning (3 Austin Critics Table Awards) and original all-female version of Puccini’s classic opera, La Bohème. LOLA first produced La Femme Bohème in the summer of 2014. “LFB” has since gone on to be performed in Boston, Tennesse, and was remounted in Austin in 2016 and 2017.

About MOONSTRUCK: A celebration of love, passion, family and life, director Norman Jewison's MOONSTRUCK is, to put it simply, one of the best romantic comedies of all time. John Patrick Shanley's tale of perfectly mismatched lovers deservedly won the 1987 Academy Award for best original screenplay, and it's a splendid piece of writing: uproarious yet touching, poignant yet playful. Cher (who won the best actress Oscar) is fiercely funny as Loretta Castorini, a widowed bookeeper who has given up on waiting for Mr. Right and agreed to marry kind, bland Johnny (Danny Aiello). However, when Loretta meets Johnny's wild-hearted brother, Ronny (the volcanic/vulnerable Nicolas Cage), her dull life suddenly spirals out of control and she is transformed from frumpy to ravishing.

Your ticket includes:
MOONSTRUCK in 35mm @ Alamo Ritz at 3:45pm
Boat Party and LOLA Performance on Capital Cruises from 6pm-9pm

You must attend the screening to recieve your wristband for the boat ride. Guests will be expected to arrange their own transportation from Alamo Ritz (320 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78701) to Captial Cruises (208 Barton Springs Rd, Austin, TX 78704).

We Might Be Struck By Lightning

20883046_1582832631737480_7896133860134006010_n.jpg

LOLA invites you to join us in August for a very special event. We Might Be Struck By Lightning is a choreographed chamber opera pastiche following two women on their personal journeys of love, loss, depression, and redemption. We Might Be Struck By Lightning takes the genre of classical “art song”, traditionally presented in a recital setting, and weaves it together with piano, violin, and cello to create a tapestry of storytelling that is further elevated through dance and movement. Music by Fauré, Schumann, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, and more!

Stage direction and concept creation by Rebecca Herman. Singers Claudia Chapa and Cristina Maria Castro with dancers Clay Moore, Mari Akita, Sarah Annie Navarrete, and Erica Gionfriddo bring the shows themes to life. Music direction by Peter Stopschinski with orchestral collaboration from Sonja Larson and Nora Karakousoglou. Choreography by Rebecca Whitehurst and lighting by Natalie George. Costume design by Emily Cawood, makeup and hair design by Wendy Michaels Sanders, stage management by Carli Werner, and carpentry work by Zac Crofford.

Tickets are $10-$30 for all performances except August 20th which includes a FREE option. Approximate running time is 1 hour and 45 minutes with one intermission. This opera explores mature themes. Please use your discretion when bringing young children.

We look forward to sharing this experience with you, the Austin community, and those brave enough to visit our fine town in late August. Thank you as always for your support and enthusiasm! This project is supported in part by the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department.

We Might Be Struck By Lightning will run August 18, 19, 25, and 26 from 7 - 9 pm and August 20 and 27 from 2:30 - 4:30 pm.  All performances will be at the Mexican American Cultural Center.  This project is supported in part by the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department.
